One in five London parents have such poor literacy skills they cannot read a bedtime story to their children, the London Standard newspaper reports (June 9th, 2011). Shocking figures reveal that 370,000 mothers and fathers are not confident enough to read aloud – significantly reducing their child’s chances of learning to read. Hundreds of thousands of parents in London are only ‘functionally literate’, meaning they have the reading age of an 11 year old. It means they struggle to read technical documents, mobile phone contracts, and lack the confidence to read books to their own children.
