The London Children's Practice was delighted to welcome Professor Charles (Vern) Simpson to the Wimpole Street clinic just before Christmas.
VERN SIMPSON has been involved with individuals with learning needs for over 60 years. His unique teaching methods swiftly led to recognition from the US State Department and he joined them on a national initiative to share these methods with teachers and schools, leading workshops and in-service trainings throughout the country. These involved including students with special needs working in mainstream classrooms, providing career education training, developing a peer tutor volunteer model and setting up a pre-college curriculum for mildly disabled students. The project began with six classroom units and resulted in more than 250 in less than three years.
Prof. Simpson then joined a school district with over 14,000 students as Supervisor of Special Education where he developed and administered SEN programmes working with over 100 practitioners. Whilst continuing working with the State Department he then spent 12 years as a School Principal, and was then appointed Director of the Central Ohio Special Education Regional Resource Centre administering projects in more than 70 school districts. Vern has written several highly regarded papers and lectured extensively at Capital University in Ohio, other universities in the US and around the world where his unique ideas on producing a learning experience of excellence for every participant are held in high esteem.
Prof. Michael Lewis, CEO of the London Children’s Practice and Jackie Harland, Principal Therapist welcomed Prof. Simpson to LCP where he sat in on several sessions and over lunch gave an insight into recent professional developments in special needs education from the USA. It is planned that Prof. Simpson will continue to work with LCP in a consultancy capacity. For example, a specialist London based Summer Camp facility for LCP children is being discussed with Prof Simpson.

Jackie Harland said, ‘For colleagues within LCP to have access to such an experienced and highly regarded US special needs expert is a fantastic resource and demonstrates our ambition to be at the forefront of providing the very best therapy to children with learning disabilities and difficulties thereby making LCP the first choice children’s therapy practice in the UK’.

‘The London Children’s Practice has literally been a life saver. It was such a relief to finally have my son’s speech difficulties recognised and to be met with such a practical positive approach. My son loves his ‘friends’ at the London Children’s Practice. It had been like looking at him through a pane of glass where I couldn’t reach him. Now I can. Thank You!’ Mrs. White
